OneRepublic's debut, Dreaming Out Loud, established the group as savvy hit-makers infusing adult-alternative rock with touches of bouncy urban-pop. Its follow-up, Waking Up, is a different beast. It's the group demanding of its audience, "We want to be taken seriously." Of course, no one would ever mistake OneRepublic for Radiohead (or even Coldplay), but their sophomore effort is carefully layered with gnarled dance grooves, winding compositions, chamber piano and lush orchestration.
